“Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord.” ...
Who is it that demands our obedience? He who, in the language of Scripture, “doeth according to His will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay His hand, or say unto Him, What doest Thou?”SH vii:13 (only), 17–20
The time for thinkers has come. ... Ignorance of God is no longer the stepping-stone to faith. The only guarantee of obedience is a right apprehension of Him whom to know aright is Life eternal.
SH 14:9
To be “with the Lord” is to be in obedience to the law of God, to be absolutely governed by divine Love, — by Spirit, not by matter.
SH 19:26
If living in disobedience to Him, we ought to feel no security, although God is good.
SH 594:19
Spirit. Divine substance; Mind; divine Principle; all that is good; God; that only which is perfect, everlasting, omnipresent, omnipotent, infinite.
SH 227:18
“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” Love and Truth make free, but evil and error lead into captivity.
SH 579:15 (only, to .), 15 a (only, to ;); 580:13–16 an (to ;)
Adam. ... a falsity; ... an inverted image of Spirit; the image and likeness of what God has not created, namely, matter, sin, sickness, and death; the opposer of Truth, termed error; ...
SH 307:31–1; 308:5–8
Above error’s awful din, blackness, and chaos, the voice of Truth still calls: “Adam, where art thou? Consciousness, where art thou? ... Until the lesson is learned that God is the only Mind governing man, mortal belief will be afraid as it was in the beginning, and will hide from the demand, “Where art thou?”
SH 532:31–1
The first impression material man had of himself was one of nakedness and shame.
SH 214:9–12
Adam, represented in the Scriptures as formed from dust, is an object-lesson for the human mind. The material senses, like Adam, originate in matter and return to dust, — are proved non-intelligent.
SH 172:17–19 (to ;)
If the material body is man, he is a portion of matter, or dust. On the contrary, man is the image and likeness of Spirit; ...
SH 267:3–5 (to 1st .)
The offspring of God start not from matter or ephemeral dust. They are in and of Spirit, divine Mind, and so forever continue.
SH 97:26
“He uttered His voice, the earth melted.” This Scripture indicates that all matter will disappear before the supremacy of Spirit.
SH 126:2 The
The problem of nothingness, or “dust to dust,” will be solved, and mortal mind will be without form and void, for mortality will cease when man beholds himself God’s reflection, even as man sees his reflection in a glass.
SH 589:4 (only, to .), 5
Jacob. ... Inspiration; the revelation of Science, in which the so-called material senses yield to the spiritual sense of Life and Love.
SH 308:16–23
Jacob was alone, wrestling with error, — struggling with a mortal sense of life, substance, and intelligence as existent in matter with its false pleasures and pains, — when an angel, a message from Truth and Love, appeared to him and smote the sinew, or strength, of his error, till he saw its unreality; and Truth, being thereby understood, gave him spiritual strength in this Peniel of divine Science.
SH 581:4 (only, to .), 4 God’s (only, to ;), 5 the
Angels. ... God’s thoughts passing to man; ... the inspiration of goodness, purity, and immortality, counteracting all evil, sensuality, and mortality.
SH 5:3–6
Sorrow for wrong-doing is but one step towards reform and the very easiest step. The next and great step required by wisdom is the test of our sincerity, — namely, reformation.
SH 8:14–18
If we feel the aspiration, humility, gratitude, and love which our words express, — this God accepts; and it is wise not to try to deceive ourselves or others, for “there is nothing covered that shall not be revealed.”
SH 444:10
Step by step will those who trust Him find that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
SH 184:12–17
Truth, Life, and Love are the only legitimate and eternal demands on man, and they are spiritual lawgivers, enforcing obedience through divine statutes.
Controlled by the divine intelligence, man is harmonious and eternal.SH 228:25–29 (to 2nd .)
There is no power apart from God. Omnipotence has all-power, and to acknowledge any other power is to dishonor God. The humble Nazarene overthrew the supposition that sin, sickness, and death have power. He proved them powerless.
SH 25:17–19, 22–24
By his obedience to God, he demonstrated more spiritually than all others the Principle of being. ...
Though demonstrating his control over sin and disease, the great Teacher by no means relieved others from giving the requisite proofs of their own piety.SH 138:18–22
Christians are under as direct orders now, as they were then, to be Christlike, to possess the Christ-spirit, to follow the Christ-example, and to heal the sick as well as the sinning.
SH 323:28–32
The effects of Christian Science are not so much seen as felt. It is the “still, small voice” of Truth uttering itself. We are either turning away from this utterance, or we are listening to it and going up higher.
SH 227:21–22, 23–24
Christian Science raises the standard of liberty and cries: “Follow me! ... Jesus marked out the way.
SH 323:9
Beholding the infinite tasks of truth, we pause, — wait on God. Then we push onward, until boundless thought walks enraptured, and conception unconfined is winged to reach the divine glory.
Hymn. 136
I love Thy way of freedom, Lord, / To serve Thee is my choice, / In Thy clear light of Truth I rise / And, listening for Thy voice, / I hear Thy promise old and new, / That bids all fear to cease: / My presence still shall go with thee / And I will give thee peace.
Though storm or discord cross my path / Thy power is still my stay, / Though human will and woe would check / My upward-soaring way; / All unafraid I wait, the while / Thy angels bring release, / For still Thy presence is with me, / And Thou dost give me peace.
I climb, with joy, the heights of Mind, / To soar o’er time and space; / I yet shall know as I am known / And see Thee face to face. / Till time and space and fear are naught / My quest shall never cease, / Thy presence ever goes with me / And Thou dost give me peace.Words: Violet Hay
Music: Irish Melody
Hymn. 5
A voice from heaven we have heard, / The call to rise from earth; / Put armor on, the sword now gird, / And for the fight go forth. / The foe in ambush claims our prize, / Then heed high heaven’s call. / Obey the voice of Truth, arise, / And let not fear enthrall.
The cause requires unswerving might: / With God alone agree. / Then have no other aim than right; / End bondage, O be free. / Depart from sin, awake to love: / Your mission is to heal. / Then all of Truth you must approve, / And only know the real.Words: Irving C. Tomlinson
Music: English Traditional Melody Arr. by Ralph Vaughan Williams
Hymn. 307
Shepherd, show me how to go / O’er the hillside steep, / How to gather, how to sow,— / How to feed Thy sheep; / I will listen for Thy voice, / Lest my footsteps stray; / I will follow and rejoice / All the rugged way.
Thou wilt bind the stubborn will, / Wound the callous breast, / Make self-righteousness be still, / Break earth’s stupid rest. / Strangers on a barren shore, / Lab’ring long and lone, / We would enter by the door, / And Thou know’st Thine own;
So, when day grows dark and cold, / Tear or triumph harms, / Lead Thy lambkins to the fold, / Take them in Thine arms; / Feed the hungry, heal the heart, / Till the morning’s beam; / White as wool, ere they depart, / Shepherd, wash them clean.Words: Mary Baker Eddy
Music: Arr. from Robert Williams
